Covered Bridges at Flume Gorge historical site

Pemigewasset River Bridge- This picturesque covered bridge is one of the oldest in the state. It was erected in 1886 and had been restored several times. Such bridges were called "kissing bridges" because of the darkness and privacy they provided. This one was built to cross the Pemigewasset River, whose name means "swift or rapid current" in the Abnaki Indian language.
Sentinel Pine Bridge and Pool - On the high cliff above the pool, the Sentinel Pine stood for centuries. It was one of the largest in the state, nearly 175 feet high, with a circumference of 16 feet. The 1938 hurricane uprooted this giant pine, whose trunk now forms the base for the Sentinel Pine Bridge.
